Learn to see, our father told us. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the eye must be trained. No one took this advice more to heart than my brother Sean. It became his ruling passion. He studied light — wooed it like a lover, stalked it like a hunter.” Thomas Thonson
I grew up—quite literally—with a camera in my hands. My father taught graphic design and photography at Humboldt State University, and at a very young age I took advantage of his knowledge (and his dark room) to begin a lifelong study of light and composition. My passion led me to a degree from Art Center College of Design and on to a successful career as a photographer and then as a director/cinematographer.
I love telling stories visually and capturing images that are both iconic and personal. Throughout my career I have directed spots for virtually every automaker in the world and a very diverse group of advertisers and their products.
Extreme sports and an ongoing exploration of the great outdoors are a big part of my lifestyle. My understanding of light and ability to shoot action in nature is earned from experience. I love what I do. I think it shows.
